Dorm Project: (April 17th)

   *  Project/Activity – contest who can bring most recyclables, winner gets "something mediocre" (thanks Nick)
   * Money for prizes – CELS has money, someone should talk to Corrie Haley - come up with certificates to get winners
   * Movie – Hannah working on getting the movie (Who Killed the Electric Car), Rachel may Netflix it
   * Advertising – go door to door, make lots of noise, tell people to come hang out watch the movie etc.
   * Posters/Flyers – hand out earth day flyers, there will be no Top 5 flyers only a poster at the table

Earth Day: (April 20th)


Bands

   * -URI Jazz band still needs a contract (Max will have it, if he does not already)
   * -Line up of bands from 5pm – 12am:  URI Jazz, Mike Celleme, Neo Nouveau, The Law
   * -Is an hour and a half too long for bands to play?
   * Push time slots up? (especially if rain date since we must be done at 10pm)
   * What do we do between breaks?

Vendors/Organizations

   * -Food vendors - are they staying after 5 pm when bands start?
   *  International Pockets is staying until 10pm
   * -Insurance needed for vendors also (Martin will be working on that)
   * -Martin confirming all companies by Monday
         o -REI seems to be flaking out, SurfRider not responding to anyone
         o -Companies that will be contacted (not yet invited): EMS, Patagonia, Wildwood (clothes place?) 
   * - Is the lady who sells jewelry coming? – yes.
   * -Honda sending a car and only a car…sketchy but if that's the case tell them we aren't responsible for damages
   * - At least 9 URI organizations confirmed and having tables
   * -New co-sponsorship from URISSC ($50) thanks!
   * -Have group members maybe man tables for companies who can't send people i.e. Sierra Club, Wildlife Refuge, Nature Conservancy 
Activities
   * -Group members: PLEASE (if you have this stuff) donate hangers, paints, paint brushes, money for your t-shirt, and any other random things!
   * -Nick has the sheet for the mural, also getting one clothing rack for Clothing Swap
   * -Rob and Nick getting tie dye stuff and biodegradable water balloons
   * -4 clothing racks would be ideal for the Swap, but so far we only have one
   * -there will be Frisbee, we should try and get glow in the dark stuff for night fun-ness
   * -photo petition will be taking place 

Advertising

   * -Press release written and sent out (sounds awesome by the way)
   * -ProJo article possibly
   * -Katie being interviewed about Earth day (took place Friday)
   * -put up flyers – emporium, offices, dorms, busy buildings (even if they'll get taken down), emporium windows (ask first), NOT outside
   * -chalking
   * -big posters for Memorial Union getting printed up

Jobs

   * We didn't get to talking about this but our members should have jobs for Earth Day
   * Some of the jobs would include:
   * -Media Person(s) – someone to direct media to if they have questions/interest etc.
   * -People stationed at booths
   * -Band person
   * -Vendor/org person
   * -MC will be Max
   * -Clothing Swap people
   * -Photo Petition People

1. Movies (Hannah)

   * Next movie: Kilowatt Ours Tuesday, April 10th 5-7pm
   * Hannah needs help advertising
   * Nick will make small flyers at campus copy


2. Policy Committee (Hannah)

   * the policy committee will meet after Earth Day
   * Rachel reported several updates that may mean we should change our strategy


3. Dorm Program (Christie/Hannah)

   * Tuesday, April 17th 5-7pm: Who Killed the Electric Car
   * Rachel made "top 5" environmental things to do in your dorm and will give it to Corrie to print on the giant printer
   * that display will go up on Monday, April 16th
   * Christie is thinking of a cool activity to follow the movie


4. EARTH DAY

   * Confirmed band schedule (which may be unconfirmed...), need to sign band contracts ASAP
   * Clothing Swap
         o Nick asked Fashion Dept. to borrow clothing racks
         o can also ask Theater Dept.
         o back-up plan: clothesline!
   * Speakers
         o if we can't have amplified sound during classes, how will she speak??
         o Rachel will look into it and confirm Allison Rogers either way (she can have a table)
   * Nick will talk to Parking Services about parking on/near quad and vendors and bands getting through gates
   * Workshops
         o Rob will do tie-dye workshop
         o We'll buy 40 plain t-shirts & hopefully get enough donations to break even
         o Christie will look into getting a yoga workshop
         o Rob will look into getting a Master Gardeners workshop
         o Tara and Anne are still confirmed for composting and sustainable student
         o Rachel will come up with schedule
   * Photo Petition for Bus
         o Get as many as possible before Earth Day, and then print more throughout day
         o Laura will use big woodward printer
   * Clean-up (Katie)- April 26th - thank god it's after Earth Day
   * Still need more money - several possible funding sources
   * Need to come up with layout for quad - google earth is our friend!
   * Vendors & Orgs (Martin & Wendy)
         o Food - Crazy Burger & International Pockets are confirmed, waiting for Bagelz
         o Cars - Who volunteered to call Honda again?  I didn't write it down...
         o Have confirmation from several orgs, working on more
         o Argued about tables - looks like we'll have enough...yay!
         o Don't need tax ID numbers or a promoters permit unless vendors are (in Sheri's words) "selling crystals out of the back of a van"
   * Mural is happening (Nick)
   * Biodegradable water balloon fight is happening (Nick & Rob)
   * T-shirts - agreed on design, everyone will pay for their own shirt, hopefully we'll be able to pay back with donations
   * ADVERTISING!!!
         o Rachel, Laura, Katie making flyers
         o Need to have copies for next booth, if not sooner!
         o Cigar ads are expensive...we'll decide next meeting whether we want to do it or not
         o Martin will talk to Cigar editor about giving us op ed space or doing a story on us

         o BOOTHS: Thurs. 12th & 19th - will be important advertising
         o Graham and Rachel will work on a press release
         o Get the buzz going - talk about it to everyone!

Bands need contracts – Max has some or they can be found in SEC office

We got the smallest stage, making it $300 cheaper..yay!

1. ELECTIONS - voting March 29th!!!

  • Nick will run for Presidente!
  • Hannah will run for Vice Presidente!
  • Laura will run for Treasurer!
  • Wendy will run for Secretary (and will share minute-taking with Rachel)!
  • Auriane will run for Renewable Energy Club President! (she used to be REC President, but has been in California for the past year. I'm actually having dinner with her in San Fran tonight!)


2. CAMPUS CLIMATE CHALLENGE

  • Reviewed our "matrix"
  • Put Hannah in charge of a policy committee - she'll organize a meeting soon (I have a bunch of interesting news)


3. DORM PROGRAM

  • Appointed Christie as dorm program committee leader - she'll think about an activity for April 17th at North Woods


4. MOVIES

  • Laura made snazzy flyers!

5. EARTH DAY

  • The Attic and Next Haven can't play, looking for replacements

6. POST MEETING MESSAGING

  • After the meeting some of us stuck around to work on a message for our campus climate challenge and it goes like this:

1. SUMMIT RECAP

  • the summit was cool, we learned a lot and thought of/stole some great ideas for our down-the-line bus campaign
  • Brown is the only school in RI that has gotten their president to commit to climate neutrality...we will be next.
  • we were introduced to the Sierra Club's MATRIX, which basically guides you through a plan of action for any campaign
  • we're getting together THIS SUNDAY March 11th at 12:00pm in the Union "airport lounge" to create a SAS MATRIX!

2. ELECTIONS

  • nominations for club officers will be next week (March 15th)
  • we were going to have elections the following week, but that's spring break, so we'll have to improvise...
  • President, Vice President, Scribe, Treasurer - think about it!

3. NORTH WOODS DORM PROJECT

  • we'll set up our display on Monday April 16th and leave it up through earth day
  • we'll show a movie on Tuesday April 17th
  • top 5 things students can do for the environment (we'll have examples under each item):
    • 1. Save Energy
    • 2. Conserve Water
    • 3. Recycle
    • 4. More reusables, less disposables!
    • 5. Use environmentally friendly products

4. MOVIE SERIES

  • March 27, April 3 & 10, 5-7pm, Atrium 2
  • End of Suburbia, How Cuba Survived Peak Oil, Kilowatt Ours, Who Killed the Electric Car
  • Laura will make a flyer
  • we'll advertise at the recycling booths

5. COMMUTER SURVEYS

  • we have a table with the External Affairs Committee to distribute surveys on Monday March 12th, 10-3, outside the Atriums
  • the next URI-Narragansett Coalition meeting is going to be on campus - I didn't write down the date, but we should definitely go to that

6. EARTH DAY

  • we got more money! the College Democrats graciously donated $50. Martin will go to the WRIU meeting next week to ask them for some big bucks
  • Tyler can get American Apparel t-shirts printed $4 each + $40 supplies + labor
  • we'll come up with designs for next week and see which one we like the best
  • the Attic is confirmed
  • worked out band schedule - if we can go until midnight we can fit in another band
  • Laura will book booths for the three Thursdays before Earth Day to advertise

0. CURRENT EVENTS!

  • Australia bans incandescent light bulbs, encouraging a shift to CFLs!
  • Total lunar eclipse March 3rd, 6:30pm!

1. CLIMATE SUMMIT - March 3rd

  • carpools - Nick and Hannah will drive
  • meet at 9:00am at the bus circle/pharmacy building area

2. SUSTAINABILITY STUFF

  • Anne Bloomfield is creating an online sustainability guide for students
  • if anyone is interested in helping her finish it and continuing to update and promote the website next year, contact Anne at abloomfield@mail.uri.edu
  • Tara Germond is helping to create two awesome partnerships: a URI Energy Partnership and a URI Sustainability Partnership, which if approved would provide opportunities for research, outreach, and student fellowships in energy and sustainability. if anyone would like to be involved in this process or is interested in being a fellow, contact Tara at tara@uri.edu

3. DORM PROGRAM

  • we decided that our display should be go up on Monday, April 16th and we should show a documentary there on Thursday April 18th

we also talked about having a more interactive event – maybe creating a sculpture of recycling to be displayed during Earth Day, any ideas?

  • the display will have the top 5 things students should do to live more sustainably in the North Woods dorm

4. EARTH DAY

  • Bands
    • no headliner, so we'll go with the Attic who will probably play for free and draw and large crowd – Martin will contact them
    • we got a $500 SEC co-sponsorship!!
    • we'll also be asking WRIU on Tuesday at 6pm and the College Democrats on Wednesday at 7pm
  • Organizations
    • we discussed which orgs to invite – decided that we'll invite orgs that most directly relate to the environment first and others as we have space. also decided that if we invite the dems we should also invite the republicans (but they will both be asked to do something related to the environment)
    • Vendors - Martin has started contacting car dealers, waiting to hear back
  • Speaker? - Rod Driver, Miss RI,…?
  • Other stuff
    • Tyler found a screen printer who will make our shirts for cheap! – will get us a quote next week
    • we can sell things that we make, so green light for tie-dye table, craft sales, and extra t-shirt sales
    • Clean-up – Senate wants to do a clean-up with us – Spencer will work will Katie to plan it!
    • Martin and I are working on the paperwork applying for office space and level 2 recognition (which means more money!)

2. CLUB STUFF

  • We will vote on a President and Treasurer in March, that's when turnover happens (not next semester)
  • Rachel will go to SOARC meeting on Monday to discuss the details of the switch

3. DORM PROJECT

  • We'll be helping Corrie Haley with CELS programming in the North Woods dorm during the month of April.
  • The idea is to inform students about what they can do to live more sustainably in the dorms.
  • Need to come up with top 5 things they can do - *CELS can pay for printing flyers, stickers, etc*
  • Set up info booth for 3 days, on third day have an evening event like a do it in the dark or film screening

4. EARTH DAY

  • Bands:
  • Max is sending Rachel email from SEC - Rachel will go to SEC meeting on Monday and ask for money
  • We need to sign contracts with all bands (even if we don't pay them) which are available outside Bruce Hamilton's office - thanks Spencer!
  • Two possible headliners - Jared Paul ~$500 or the Attic $0 - everyone knows the attic, not many people know Jared Paul, so the Attic will probably draw a bigger crowd
  • Still have one week to find a headliner - if not, we'll go with the Attic.
  • Activities: Nick - ran down list of activities and status so far
    • mural - have canvas, artist will draw something and people can fill in** clothing swap - anyone have some clothing racks we could borrow?, members will donate hangers, full length mirrors, Hannah can get cut up used paper from recycling center for tickets** rock wall - costs $500, but amanda said the outing club is trying to pay for it - awesome!!
    • tie-dye table - Rob's working on it - could be a fundraiser for us!
    • earth day t-shirts - tyler can get American Apparel shirts for under $2, but we need to find a cheap printing place, maybe get extras and try to sell them

1. RESTRUCTURING

  • The group voted on making SAS the main group and REC the subcommittee. All approved!
  • Bylaws need to be re-written
  • We need to go to the next SOARC meeting to tell Senate

1) Recapped the movie – made just over $120 for are fundraising account. 2) Earth Day

  • Bands – no update other than Max is talking the SEC about co-sponsorship
  • Vendors – Martin is sorting stuff out
  • Organizations – See above, replace Martin with Wendy
  • Solar Splash – possible ASME funding, will at least have a presentation
  • Activities – Kate and Nick need to meet

3) SAS breaking off from REC?

  • Further debate as to whether we should break off or have REC be our subcommittee. Breaking off will split the budget for both groups, staying together and making REC a subcommittee would probably offend the original members of the group who will be coming back. Rachel and Martin will explore the issue further and talk to old members about how they would feel in either situation.

4) We need space!

  • Rachel and Martin will go to SOURCE meeting on Mon. to discuss this and breaking off issue.
