[edit] CFL-for-Incandescent Light Bulb Exchange
Compact Fluorescent Bulbs not only save energy, but are actually much better for the environment than incandescent bulbs. SAS is currently working on a proposal to URI Facilities to purchase about 2500 CFL light bulbs to distribute to students living in on-campus housing. Our group will bring these bulbs to dorm buildings and exchange them for student's incandescent bulbs. This project focuses strictly on personal-use lights such as desk lamps. Our calculations have determined with the implementation of this plan, we can save URI approximately $24,000 in energy costs (this includes the cost of the CFL light bulbs!) and reduce carbon emissions by 100 tonnes.
This project holds its own meetings on Mondays at 6:00 PM in our office, Memorial Union Room 304.
[edit] Local Foods Harvest Dinner at the Dining Halls
Eating local food helps ease carbon emissions by not needing long-distance transport, helps out small farming families, and lets you know exactly where your food comes from along with what has been done to it. SAS is working with Dining Hall services to bring local foods into the dining halls. We are currently planning a "Harvest Dinner" in the dining halls where the main course will be made of exclusively local food. We will provide all students with information on the farms and the people who own them. Date, menu, and information coming soon!
[edit] Operation Transportation
Fight climate change at URI with clean transportation and take responsibility for our future!
Let’s face it: gas is expensive, URI’s parking situation sucks, and trying to get off campus in the afternoon…not fun. Maybe commuters have gotten used to it, maybe they feel like they have no choice, or maybe they just don’t care. Whatever it is, we feel that commuters deserve convenient and environmentally responsible alternatives to expensive and inefficient modes of transportation.
So we’re currently developing a proposal to present to President Carothers, asking him to adopt a Clean Transportation Policy for URI. This policy would include a URI-Narragansett commuter bus, incentives for carpoolers (like a closer carpool parking lot), and a cleaner fleet (like alternative fueled URI vehicles). Adopting these solutions will:
- Reduce URI's greenhouse gas emissions
- Reduce traffic on and around campus
- Alleviate parking problems
- Save us money!
